1.        brooding: meditating, thinking, depressed

After her boyfriend broke up with her, she brooded for days.

2.        convey: to carry from one place to another or communicate, transmit, to put into words

I’m trying to convey to you the importance of studying vocabulary ahead of time.

3.        empowered: to be given power over people or things

The boy with low self-esteem felt empowered after his coach told him that he was the best player on the team.

4. instigate: to provoke, stir up

The poorly trained police officer instigated a riot when he threw a tomato at the 80 year old minister speaking at the rally.

4.        pauper: a very poor person

The young pauper begged for money on the streets.

5.        righteousness: without guilt or sin, morally upright (self righteous has a negative connotation because of the arrogance)

The pastor was full of righteousness and was an excellent role model for his congregation.

6.        ruminate: to reflect on over and over

He ruminated over the plan of attack before implementing (doing) it.

He ruminated for hours before implementing the plan.

7.        scrutiny: close observation or examination

The scientist scrutinized the data he had collect about the dangerous disease.

The profession of diamond appraisal requires careful scrutiny.

8.        subsequent: following in time or order, the next one, comes after

Wednesday is subsequent to Tuesday.

9.        whim: impulsive thought, sudden idea

On a whim, Carlos suggested that we all wear orange bracelets to class tomorrow.
